数学者としての挑戦
フランス留学時代に、生涯の研究テーマである多変数複素関数論に出会う。当時まだまだ発展途上であった多変数複素関数論において大きな業績を残した。
一変数複素関数論は解析学から数学的解析に至る雛型であり、そこでは幾何、代数、解析が一体となった理論が展開される。本来あるべき数学はこれを多次元化する試みであると考えられる。一変数複素関数論の素朴な一般化は多変数複素関数論であるものの、多変数複素関数論には一変数複素関数論にはなかったような現象が出現し、それらの解明には本質的な困難が伴う。これらの困難を一人で乗り越えて荒野を開拓した人物こそ岡である。
具体的には三つの大問題の解決が有名だが、特に当時の重要な未解決問題であったハルトークスの逆問題（レヴィの問題ともいう）に挑み、約二十年の歳月をかけて解決した。岡はその過程で生み出した概念を不定域イデアルとするが、アンリ・カルタンを筆頭としたフランスの数学者達がこの概念を基に連接層という現代の数学において極めて重要な概念を定義した。また、クザンの第2問題を解くためには、連続関数の範囲で解けば十分であるとする「岡の原理」も著名である。
その強烈な異彩を放つ業績から、西欧の数学界ではそれがたった一人の数学者によるものとは当初信じられず、「岡潔」はニコラ・ブルバキのような数学者集団によるペンネームであろうと思われていたこともある。
教育者の側面
京都帝国大学時代には湯川秀樹、朝永振一郎らも岡の講義を受けており、物理学の授業よりもよほど刺激的だったと語っている。
広中平祐が33歳でコロンビア大学教授に就任が決まった時、未解決問題であった代数多様体の特異点解消問題について日本数学会で講演した。その内容は、様々な制限条件を付けた形でまずは研究しようという提案であった。その時、岡が立ち上がり、広中が提案を否定し、逆にもっと理想化した難しい問題を設定して、それを解くべきであると言った。その後、広中は制限を外して理想化する形で解き、フィールズ賞の受賞業績となる。
後に京都産業大学教授となり、「日本民族」を講義した。
晩年の岡の主張は超高次元の理想である真善美妙を大切にせよというもので、真には“知”、善には“意”、美には“情”が対応し、それらを妙が統括し“智”が対応すると述べた。一方で日本民族は人類の中でもとりわけ情の民族であるため、根本は情であるべきとも語った。情という感覚は、縁起の無限連鎖のつながりで世界を観る。また日本民族は知が不得手であるため、西洋的なインスピレーションより東洋的な情操・情緒を大切にすることで分別智と無差別智の働きにより知を身につけるべきと提唱している。さらに現代日本は自他弁別本能・理性主義・合理主義・物質主義・共産主義などにより「汚染されている」と警鐘を鳴らし、これらを無明と位置づけ、心の彩りを神代調に戻し生命の喜びを感じることで無限に捨てるべきと述べた。
どんなポイントが令和哲学、心の時代と繋がるのか。
令和哲学を知ったら、私たち日本人が、西洋の物理・数学を完全学問へと案内することは当然行くべき道であり、果たすべき役割であることがわかります。
そんな私たちに、日本人の底力と可能性をあらためて感じさせてくれる方を発見。
それが、明治に生まれ昭和初期に、日本人として数学言語の世界で西洋を驚かせる業績を残した岡潔先生です。
その後岡先生は、日本の心（日本は真善美の中でとりわけ美の民族である）の啓蒙に目覚め、たくさんの随筆を書き、数々の対談や大学での教育活動を実践されています。
その内容から岡先生は、令和哲学でいう、瓶と鳥の外を知って瓶の中で生きる美学を伝えようされた方と思われます。
日本での「心の哲学」や心身医学の世界にも大きな影響を与えた人物として知っておくべき方と思い、ご紹介しました。
最後に、興味深い岡先生についての記述を抜粋しておきます。

岡は仏教をある時期まで信仰していた。岡自身によれば、岡は「純粋な日本人」であり、日本人として持っている「情緒」に基づいて、その数学的世界を創造した。岡はこのような自身の体験に基づいた随筆をいくつか書いていて、一般にはむしろそちらの方でよく知られている。
三高時代、岡は友人に対し「僕は論理も計算もない数学をやってみたい」と語っている。岡の考えでは論理や計算は数学の本体ではなく、表面的なことを追うだけでは答えが見えてこないと思っていた。この見えざる数学の本体に迫ることと、仏教的叡智や情緒の探求は岡にとって表裏一体であったと考えられる。
岡自身、彼が直面した三つの大問題の解決にあたりインスピレーション型（花木型）→梓弓型→情操・情緒型（大木型）と移行してゆき、この日本的西洋型精神統一法と無差別智のみの禅型精神統一法を使い分けることで老後の日常生活を乗り切っていたと語っている。一方最晩年になると世間智については使ってはならないと語っているが、西洋の理性はすべて世間智型平等性智であるため、理性を使わなくてよい社会を建設しなければならないとも語っている。

2. 秩序（計算）の導入と存在の終焉
物語の核心は、南と北の帝が**「こんとん」に七つの穴（目・耳・鼻・口）**を「つくってやる」という行為です。
七つの穴の創設:
これは**「社会常識と称する道理や秩序、ルール」（考察）の強制的な導入**を象徴しています。
哲学体系では、計算（数・四則演算）とは単位 [1] と、垂直性 [i] によって計測・分化し、認識を可能にする力です。七つの穴は、まさにこの**「計測・認識の器官」**にあたります。
「こんとん」の終焉:
計算可能な単位や次元（目・耳＝計測・認識）を外部から押しつけられた瞬間、「なんにでもなれる」という無限の可能性を秘めた根源的な存在 e は、その超越性を失い、「二度と起き上がらなくなった」。
これは、混沌（e）が秩序（コスモス、計算）に分化し、起動するプロセスの裏側、すなわち**「根源的な存在の終焉」を描く悲劇**です。
